This year, the Czech Republic celebrates 20 years since joining the European Union. At the same time, elections to the European Parliament are held in June. The anniversary will also be celebrated in Olomouc, where several thematic events are planned. Among them is the student Majáles, the release of a collector’s banknote and a film projection.

The entry of the Czech Republic into the European Union will first be highlighted by the Olomouc Town Hall illuminated in blue, visitors can admire it in a new light from April 30 to May 9. On Wednesday, May 1, a festive concert of the Moravian Philharmonic will take place in Reduta. From 7 p.m., a piece from The Bartered Bride, Slavic Dances, or polonaise and other compositions by European representatives will be heard here.

May 1 is precisely the date when the Czech Republic joined the EU in 2004. Therefore, on this day, the first ever euro banknote with an Olomouc motif will go on sale. Collectors buy the banknote at the cash desk of the info center for 100 crowns.

From Friday, May 3 and the entire following week, film enthusiasts can take advantage of the offer of the Metropol cinema, which will screen ten films from European cinema. A large offer of the program also awaits visitors at Olomouc’s Majáles, where on Tuesday, May 7, buskers will perform on náměstí Republiky and present their work by the organization cooperating with Eurocentre EUROPE DIRECT Olomouc. Workshops, debates, quizzes and fun competitions await visitors on site.
