Wine lovers finally got their chance, twenty-four Moravian winemakers gathered in Pilsen again to taste their production at the traditional Pilsen Wine Festival. The two-day event and pleasant weather attracted hundreds of people to Kopecky Sady, who were not deterred even by the increased entrance fee compared to previous years.

“We were forced to raise the price of a glass, which also serves as a ticket, from one hundred crowns to one hundred and twenty crowns. But it’s a new type of glass, it’s nicer and more elegant, so hopefully that will compensate the visitors for the increased price,” smiles Radek Aleš, director of the festival.

What did not increase in price was the wine itself. All winemakers sold their wines at last year’s prices.

“We have kept the prices the same for this year, but we will see what this year’s frost will do to next year. They froze almost two-thirds of the vineyards for us,” says Renata Hladová from the Vican winery.

But not all winemakers were affected by the spring frosts

“The blanket and the bottle cost the same with us as last year and in terms of frosts, fortunately they avoided us. We were lucky, so the harvest should be good again,” praises Josef Felgr from the Moravčík winery, which has its vineyards in the Pálava region around Horní Věstony.

Pleasant sunshine and good wine also attracted Špelinov’s husband to Kopecky Orchards. “We are wine lovers, so we come here regularly and preferably right after the beginning, when there are not many people here. And that the entrance fee is more expensive? That doesn’t bother us at all,” laughs Markéta Špelinová.

Pilsen wants a friendlier square. Trees and front gardens will be added

Among the visitors there are also many young people, especially women and girls. “We are here for the first time this year, previously it didn’t work out for us on time. We prefer white and sweeter wine. Now we have a semi-sweet Riesling in our glasses as the first sample,” says 27-year-old Simona, who came for wine with her friend Alena, who is a year older.

A pleasant backdrop between the stands was also provided by several bands on stage, among others, the Vincúch Cymbal Music or Jakub Děkan & Band.

The Czech wine festivals project has been introducing the general public to domestic wine and its producers for the eighth year and shows that the Czechs are far from just a nation of beer drinkers.
