Days off await us on May 1, when we celebrate Labor Day, and May 8, which is commemorated as Victory Day. Both days fall on a Wednesday this year, so many people will use their vacation for long weekends.
The law on sales time in retail and wholesale, which came into force on October 1, 2016, but brings slight confusion, many people are still fumbling with the list of days when they can go shopping. The law mandates that shops over 200 square meters must be closed during certain public holidays.
Store opening hours on May 1 and 8
- Stores are open on Labor Day (May 1)., the law on sales time does not apply to this day. However, opening hours may differ from normal days. So make sure in advance whether the store in the vicinity of your residence will be open and whether the opening hours will be adjusted.
- Shops must be closed on Victory Day (May 8). Exceptions are, for example, gas stations, pharmacies and shops at airports.
How are the long weekends coming out this year?
In 2023, there were a total of five long weekends, 2024 will offer one less, i.e. four.
Will the law be repealed?
The pair of ODS MPs Pavel Staněk and Jan Bureš want to change this system. They plan to repeal the law that limits opening hours on selected public holidays. According to them, the division is random. While on the one hand the Chamber of Commerce would welcome the change, on the other hand the trade unions are against it.
