The event took place on the afternoon of Saturday, March 23. Vladimír Tomčík came to swim in the pool, which he visits regularly, and saw a lifeless body under the water almost at the bottom. “In the first moment, it looked like the young man was diving, thanks to the jet that caused the hands to move. The man found it strange that he could last so long underwater, so he left nothing to chance and jumped into the water after him. At that moment, he found out that he was drowning and immediately began to carry him to the shore,” said police spokeswoman Eva Michalíková.

In no time, two other men came to his aid – policeman Tomáš Zevel and constable Petr Komoň. “Professionalism was shown here, the men did not hesitate for a second. On the shore, they immediately began to revive the young man, who showed no signs of life. One of the lifeguards also joined in and another called the emergency services. The men took turns in heart massage and artificial respiration. It took about ten minutes, when the young man’s vital functions were restored before the arrival of the rescuers,” added the spokeswoman.

On Tuesday, all three received an award for saving lives together with material donations from Ostrava Mayor Jan Dohnal, Ostrava Police Director Antonín Řezniček and Ostrava Municipal Police Director Miroslav Plaček.

Everyone was also thanked by the young man’s family: “We really thank you from the bottom of our hearts for saving our son. We will never forget you,” agreed the relatives of the nineteen-year-old student.
