The largest intersection in Pilsen is undergoing a transformation for 100 million crowns, crossings will be added

Builders will reconstruct Pilsen’s largest intersection U Jána next year. They will add pedestrian crossings. The intersection of five wide streets between the city center, the Plzeňské Prazdroje area and the main train station is a very busy section, and pedestrians and cyclists now have difficulty crossing it. For repairs costing more than 100 million crowns, the city wants to receive 17 million CZK from the European IROP program, the request for a subsidy was approved by the city council. The intersection will be safer for pedestrians and drivers, Mayor Roman Zarzycký (ANO) told ČTK.

“After modifications, the section can become the most direct link between the city center and the brewery area, which is frequently visited by tourists.” he stated. According to Deputy Mayor Aleš Tolar (STAN), the aim of the construction is to increase the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. “Pedestrians cannot now cross individual shoulders at the U Jána intersection, and the natural pedestrian routes from Pražská Street to the brewery and from Mikulášská to Tyršová Street are blocked.he said. Therefore, the builders will adjust the branches of the intersection in such a way that there are places for crossing and also sidewalks along Ukrainská street.

The competition for suppliers will be awarded in the form of an association of contractors – the city, the Directorate of Roads and Highways (ŘDS) and Vodárna Plzeň. The project will also include improvements to the sewage system, water supply, electric traction and lighting. “If the city receives a subsidy of 17 million crowns, it will spend 37 million crowns on the project, ŘSD 15 million crowns and Vodárna 31 million crowns,” said municipality spokeswoman Eva Barborková.

Over 50,000 cars and 600 trams pass through the intersection every day.
