They wear out quickly and repairs are complicated. These are some of the main problems faced by owners of modern phones. Maybe soon these problems will disappear. The European Union wants to bring a solution.

Modern phones have a lot of useful features, but also a few disadvantages. Among the main ones is a complex repair. Whereas before everyone could, for example, change the battery themselves, today only a few can do it. Another common problem is fast battery drain.

The European Union also noticed this and therefore came up with a proposal to solve these problems. The goal is to force smartphone and tablet manufacturers to make their devices more durable and easier to repair, reports GSMArena.

The European Union is not taking this step just to please its citizens. The proposal also has another level. It aims to reduce so-called e-waste. If the proposal passes, according to the European Commission, it would reduce carbon waste, which is equivalent to the production of five million cars on the streets.

The proposal specifically focuses on batteries and spare parts. According to him, manufacturers would be forced to provide at least 15 essential components for each device, at least five years after its launch. These parts include, for example, batteries, displays, chargers or back covers.

The proposal also requires manufacturers to either ensure 80% retention of battery capacity after 1,000 charge cycles or to supply batteries for five years. Also, various software updates should not have a negative effect on battery life. However, these measures should not apply to folding devices.

The proposal will now be dealt with by the European Commission. If all goes according to plan, she should introduce new labels that will be similar to those on TVs or washing machines. These labels would show how durable the device is. For example, protection against water and dust, resistance to falls, as well as battery life over the lifetime of the device would be evaluated.
