Although in recent months Filip Hronek has suffered a little in terms of points and games, this season is still the season of his life. He has created “personalities” in the number of assists and points, he skates over 20 minutes every night (23:36 on average), he starts in an elite pair with Quinn Hughes. It is not surprising that the Canucks want to keep the native of Hradec Králové. GM Patrik Allvin even offered the offensive-minded fullback a long-term contract, but Hronek rejected it, according to reporter Irfaan Gaffar.

$52 million over eight years.

6.5 million per season.

That’s what the contract for Hronko looked like. And probably the best Czech defender in the NHL was not satisfied with that, according to Gaffar. He sees his price tag higher.

“We consider the offer we came to him with fair,” says Allvin, who described Hronek as a “good fit”. Players that fit perfectly into the Kosatek game system.

Vancouver, if they want to keep Hronko, will have to push. Overseas, it is believed that the former mainstay of the Detroit Red Wings is eyeing at least seven million a year.

And that she believes she would get such a figure on the player market in the summer.

One can recall the case of John Klingberg, also an attack-minded Swedish defender, who made the same decision as Hronek a few years ago. And then he probably regretted it.

He had an eight-year deal with a cap hit of seven million dollars from Dallas. But he wanted more. The result was a break with Hvězdi and a test of the “power of the market”.

To Klingberg’s surprise, lucrative contracts were in short supply.

In the end, he took a one-year engagement in Anaheim for seven million, and currently works in Toronto, where he cuts only 4.1 “mega” from the salary cap.

How will Hronek turn out?

Undoubtedly, Allvin will still try to reach an agreement with the bronze medalist from the 2022 WC. But he doesn’t want to overpay, especially after the weaker second half of the season by Hronko.

Just for context, Captain Hughes is signed for $7.85 million per year.

It is up to Hronka whether he will find a common language with Allvin or whether he will speak “Klingon”.
