  • A UK esports gaming icon is warning his followers
  • Fame and money are not everything, the mental health of players is said to be overlooked

An interesting story began to emerge in Great Britain in 2019. At the time, 15-year-old Jaden Ashman became the youngest ever competitor to win the Fortnite global tournament. From that moment on, he went on a spiral of wins, awards and fabulous wealth. According to his own words, however, only 5 years later, the steep growth of his personality took its toll.

The 15-year-old millionaire did not end well

Young Ashman had everything that countless of his peers wish for: he sat at home for 8 hours at the computer, playing games and pursuing his hobby while earning money. And that’s not all – in 2019, as a 15-year-old, he won a silver medal at the Fortnite World Championship and earned a reward of 900,000 pounds, i.e. about 26.6 million crowns.

At that time, he too, or rather his mother, due to his young age, signed a contract with the Lazarus esports team, which paid Jaden about 4,000 pounds every month, i.e. almost 120,000 crowns. The young man then repaid his mother, who supported him as much as possible, and bought her a new home and a car.

The life of a player is not just a village

But as it turns out, nothing lasts forever. Today, the 20-year-old young man admitted to the public on his Tiktok profile that his short but intense esports career had a negative impact on his mental state.

“When I was playing, I was at my peak, but every night when I lay in bed and looked at myself, I wasn’t happy with who I was. […] Mental and physical health is completely overlooked when playing and years of neglect have left my body and mind in an absolutely miserable state.” he stated in several posts on his @wolfiez profile.

The death of a Czech esports icon

Jaden Ashman aka Wolfiez is trying to convey a very important message that unfortunately is often overlooked throughout the esports world. Even we in the Czech Republic have at least one tragic experience with how the blossoming of a professional esports career at a young age can completely destroy an entire personality.

In June, it will be one year since promising Czech video game player Karel “Twisten” Ašenbrener took his own life. His suicide shook not only the Czech esports pond, but also the global one, because Twisten also achieved great success in the German esports team BIG or in the French Vitality.

According to the National Institute for Mental Health (NUDZ), suicides of young people are not unique. Unfortunately, they account for up to a quarter of all deaths.
