Brenda Fruhvirtová (17) did not use the wild card for the prestigious 1,000 in Madrid this year either, and again, after a year, she ends up in the Spanish capital with the first opponent. The talented teenager did not reach the luxurious lead in the opening set and lost 5:7, 3:6 to Arantxe Rusova (33). Even Kateřina Siniaková (27) and Linda Fruhvirtová (18) failed to enter the tournament.

B. Fruhvirtová – Rusová 5:7, 3:6

Brenda Fruhvirtová again said goodbye to the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid in the first round after a year, although she had an excellent duel with Arantxa Rusová. In the opening set, however, she was unable to take advantage of a 4:0 or 5:2 lead and eventually lost the nearly hour-long set due to her own mistakes and after a streak of five lost games.

While the opening act offered a total of seven breaks, the following was also fought for an hour, but it was decided by a single hesitation on service. Fruhvirtová did not convert any of the four break points in the second set, and in the eighth game she prepared for a 40:15 lead and a service game with her own misses. The Dutch woman, ranked in the TOP 50, then ended the match without any complications.

Since the start of the 2022 season, Fruhvirtová has collected a total of 15 trophies at ITF events, but this year she is only on the top circuit. Due to the tournament limit for teenage girls, she appeared at only the fourth event this year.

In January in Auckland and at the Australian Open, she made her way from qualifying to the second round, celebrated her first major tournament wins on the top tour and made her debut in the top 100 rankings. She was also able to deal with her opening opponent at the March 1000 in Miami.

The 16-year-old Russian, who surprised a week ago on clay in Rouen with a win over world number 22 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, is playing the Mutua Madrid Open main event for only the third time in her career, and to improve on her best at this venue, she will play against world number three Coco Gauff.

Podoroská – Siniaková 6:2, 7:6

Kateřina Siniaková failed in eight of the previous nine tournaments this year in the second round at the latest, and she will not achieve a more significant result even in Madrid, where she unsuccessfully entered the clay spring. In the Spanish capital, even in her seventh start, she did not get further than the second round.

For the fourth time, she lost to her first opponent in the main competition. This time to Nadia Podoroská, who was clearly not enough even in the end of last season in Ningbo. She resisted more in Madrid, but by 2:4 in the second set she was clearly the worse player on the court due to a large number of unforced errors. Although she dramatized the match when the Argentinian took serve at the last moment, she only won two points in the tie-break.

The doubles champion from 2021 failed to enter the tournament for only the third time this season and worsened this year’s record to 10:10. On New Year’s Eve, she lost to Sloane Stephens in Brisbane, and in the second half of February she was not good enough for Emma Navarro in Dubai.

It is the American who will be Podoroska’s next opponent. The former French Open semi-finalist will look to avenge last year’s crushing defeat at the grass event in Bad Homburg against the 19th seed, as well as better her Caja Mágica best again.

Beguová – L. Fruhvirtová 6:4, 7:6

Linda Fruhvirtová lost the opening match for only the fourth time this season, but she will not record a winning streak even in Madrid, her 12th tournament of the year. After the defeat with Irina Beguová, who returned a month ago after several months of elbow problems, she will not defend last year’s participation in the second round.

Like her younger sister, she had a solid start to the match, but she did not maintain a 3:1 lead, she did not convert a break point in the eighth game, and after almost an hour of fighting, her opponent took the lead by a set. In the second set, she got into a 0:4 deficit, which she unexpectedly eliminated, and then did not allow the favorite to finish the match. However, she came up short in the tie-break, clearly losing the shortened game 0:7.

Fruhvirtová, who received a wild card from the organizers, has a ranking maximum of 49th place, however, she is currently not even in the TOP 140 ranking. The previous year’s 250th champion in Chennai is struggling tremendously after the round of 16 at last year’s Australian Open and has to participate in 125k events due to a significantly worse ranking, and she has not avoided having to play qualifiers at WTA events in recent weeks.

Due to a health break, Begu dropped into the second hundred ranking, the former world number 22 is also defending last year’s quarter-final in the Spanish capital. A year ago, she made it to the top eight here for the third time and will continue to defend a large portion of points against the tournament’s 18th seed, Madison Keys.

Among the Czech female tennis players, Sára Bejlek will also play in the first round, who won the qualification final on Tuesday and will make her sixth attempt to advance to the second round on the highest circuit. Thanks to the free lottery, Markéta Vondroušová, Barbora Krejčíková and Linda Nosková are automatically seeded in the second round.
