Artificial intelligence only at an extra cost? This year’s iPhones will probably divide users – SMARTmania.cz

--

  • This year’s 16-series iPhones are supposed to be mainly about artificial intelligence
  • But according to the latest rumors, it may not make it to all models
  • Will AI support make customers pay more?

Who does not have artificial intelligence, as if he did not exist. Apple has long avoided this phrase, preferring to use the (more accurate) term machine learning, but as it turns out, customers and investors are hearing more about artificial intelligence. The Californian company realized this shortcoming and dedicated an entire chapter to AI during the recent introduction of MacBook Air with the Apple M3 chip. It is expected that artificial intelligence will take over this year’s iPhones, but according to the latest speculation, it will only affect some models.

Artificial intelligence only for iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max

According to analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong International Tech, AI support is set to be the main dividing line between this year’s entry-level iPhones and the Pro models. In its report, the whistleblower relies on internal data from supply chains, according to which the production volume of A17 Pro chipsets has stabilized and the demand for the upcoming A18 generation chipsets is slowly increasing. Compared to previous years, Apple is reportedly planning a change in the deployment of its mobile processors – it no longer intends to use a year-old generation for basic iPhones, but will present the Apple A18 chipset in two versions:

  • Apple A18 for iPhone 16 and 16 Plus
  • Apple A18 Pro for iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max

The second-named chipset is supposed to contain 6-core graphics and, compared to the A17 Pro, is supposed to be significantly larger – allegedly due to the use of a larger number of transistors and other components for the neural coprocessor / coprocessors. For this reason, Jeff Pu believes that native AI support on the device will be limited to the top-of-the-line iPhone Pro this year, while the entry-level models will be absent or limited in some way.

At the moment, we don’t know what functions Apple will entrust AI with, but we assume that it will follow the competition and use it for editing photos, generating text, transcribing conversations, generating live captions, etc. It is quite possible that AI will be integrated directly into the voice assistant Siri , which should handle more complex tasks.

It is speculated that Apple is not developing generative models on its own, but intends to rely on Google’s Gemini solution. We will undoubtedly learn more about Apple’s artificial intelligence on June 10, which is the opening date of this year’s WWDC developer conference.
