In cases where time is at stake and lives are at stake, a phone, car, or smart watch can help. Such cases are becoming more and more frequent, and the firefighters went to one similar one on Thursday. “The owner of this iPhone has been in a serious car accident and is not responding to phone calls,” was heard in the early evening of Thursday at the operations center of line 112. At that time, no one responded to the call back.

According to the reported GPS coordinates, the place of the collision was in Kapli, a local part of Čelechovice na Hané in Prostějovsk. The operational officers sent two units of firefighters, from the Prostějov station and from Kostelc na Hané. The PČR and ZZS were also dispatched. Two people were injured in the accident, one was treated by paramedics on the spot, and the other was transported to the hospital.” described Lucie Balážová, spokesperson for the fire department of the Olomouc Region.

Firefighters recorded another case from last week. From a mobile phone, the dispatcher received a notification about a collision between a motorcyclist and a car near Němčice nad Hanou. At the same time, the accident was reported by one of the participants in the collision, stating that the motorcyclist had an open fracture of her lower leg. A unit from the Kojetín station and JSDH Němčice nad Hanou, the LZS and PČR crew were sent to the scene. Thanks to the immediate reporting of the event and the addition of information directly from the scene, the rescue chain was activated very quickly and help reached the injured woman without unnecessary delay.” spokeswoman Balážová explained.

The phone can activate an emergency call with the exact location of the accident

The way the system works is that the phone detects a serious car accident, displays an alert and automatically initiates an emergency call after 20 seconds, unless the user cancels it by then. If he does not respond, the device will play an audio message to the emergency services, informing them that the owner of the mobile has been involved in a serious accident, and will give the IZS the latitude and longitude with the approximate size of the search circle.

If there is a report from a mobile phone, the operators on the emergency line 112 receive the report. They immediately call back. Our effort is to verify and supplement the information from the report. When we are unable to contact the owner, we dispatch forces and resources for the worst case scenario. In the event of traffic accidents, we go out to rescue injured persons from crashed vehicles,” Balážová added.

Modern cars can also send an accident report, this is a so-called E-call. Cars manufactured after 2018 already have this option compulsorily built-in. Smart watches can also send emergency calls, for other cases rescuers use the Záchranka mobile application.

We welcome every step towards safety. Please note, however, that automatic accident detection systems can be activated even in the event that no serious event occurs. In this case, we recommend accepting a call back and explaining the situation to the operator. This will prevent an unnecessary rescue operation and the sending of units to a place where they are not needed at that moment.” concluded Lucie Balážová.
