A horrific car accident claimed one life in Slovakia on Sunday. Twenty-year-old judoka Martin, who even became the regional athlete of the year in the past, was found dead in the passenger seat. According to police, the young driver was trying to avoid wildlife and hit a tree at high speed. The breath test came back negative, but prosecution for the crime of manslaughter will not be avoided. The police informed about the case.

The tragic accident happened on Sunday between the villages of Nový Tekov and Malá Kozmálovce in the Nitrian region shortly after ten o’clock in the evening. “The driver of the Peugeot 406 car probably ran into the path of forest animals and while trying to avoid it, he pulled the steering wheel and went off the road, where he crashed into a tree. In addition to the driver, there was one other person in the vehicle,” the police of the Nitra region said on their Facebook page.

Immediately upon arrival, the responding firefighters and rescuers began freeing the trapped people from the crashed vehicle using hydraulic tools. “Paramedics on the spot treated a 20-year-old man with a lower limb injury who refused to be transported to the hospital,” said Petra Klimešová, spokeswoman for the Regional Directorate of the Police Rescue Service.

However, the accident was fatal for the passenger. “He suffered severe injuries from which he died on the spot,” described Klimešová. The driver was tested for alcohol, the result was negative.

Twenty-year-old Martin has successfully practiced judo in the past, in 2018 he won the Sportsman of the Year award in the city of Levice. “He trained with us from the age of ten and had success. He was a very nice boy, everyone liked him. He didn’t have it easy in life. When he was 12, his mother died,” Ludvík Kossúth, chairman of the Levice judo club, told Nový Čas.

“The police patrol and the accident service arrived at the scene and ensured traffic control. After the arrival of the forensic expert, the road was completely closed for the purpose of securing tracks. All rescue services intervened for almost three hours, and the road was passable again shortly before one hour,” described the spokeswoman of the Regional Directorate of the Fire and Rescue Service, Michaela Gundová.
