Almost a third of Czechs have changed their TV set in the last two years, customers are most attracted by the current price/performance ratio

--

The television is a part of most Czech households. The advent of more modern technologies and the affordability of devices with larger diagonals have led to the fact that almost a third of users bought a new TV in the last two years. Today, only less than 8% of families do not have a TV at home, and they only need phones, computers or laptops to watch audiovisual content. All this and much more about why we change and how we get rid of old televisions emerged from a survey conducted by CZC, number two on the Czech electronics market, among 1,100 of its customers.

As the survey showed, half of Czech households use more than one television at home. Almost 60% of us change our TV set after more than 7 years, 22% of Czechs use one device for more than 10 years. However, in the last two years or so, 31% of households have replaced their TV set.

The results of our survey correspond to the fact that the Czech TV market has been strong in the last three years or so. Several factors led to this. First of all, many people reacted to the significant reduction in prices of TVs with larger diagonals, as well as to very attractive promotional offers. At the same time, affordability led to the fact that by purchasing a new device, Czechs solved the often used uncomfortable combination of an older TV and an external DVB-T2 box. A shift in technology also contributed to the wave of purchases. The QLED screen models they offer have become very popular for the vast majority of customers currently the best price/performance ratio and from the point of view of price and features, it becomes an attractive choice,” he states Vladimír Vyhnal, product manager of the TV category at CZC. “I expect that this year there will be even more interesting promotional offers and customer interest will grow. There are still almost a third of people who use two TVs at home and bought the latest one more than 5 years ago.

Among the most common reasons for purchasing the latest TV (respondents could mark several at the same time) is the desire for better picture, sound or other better technology in 38%. This confirms that people who use older LCD image technology want an image with more expressive blacks, higher contrast and other features that improve viewing of sports broadcasts or fast action scenes. 36% of respondents wanted a bigger picture at home and 22% bought their last TV because of the transition to a new digital broadcasting format. For the sake of completeness, let us state that broadcasting in the form of DVB-T2 was launched in the Czech Republic in March 2017, and from September 2020 digital television broadcasts can only be received in this format. For 8% of all survey participants, the impulse to buy was a specific promotional offer from the seller.

Half of retired TVs “live” on, they just change places

24% of Czechs buy a new TV because their current one broke. However, the old model is disposed of by a full 37% of respondents, and another 9% of respondents have the original device unused at home. “Research has shown us that there is still a need for education in the area of ecological disposal of TVs. Almost a quarter of those who send their old television to silicon heaven do not ensure its ecological disposal. The fact that people can throw most electronics into the e-waste container, but the TV won’t fit there, no doubt contributes to this.“he adds Vladimir Vyhnal.

6% of users sell their old TV, 27% move it to another room or cottage, and 21% give it to their parents or someone else. More than half of the televisions therefore continue to serve and in new places replace even older devices, which are intended almost exclusively for disposal.
