Weather at the start of the Easter holidays: the passage of a cold front is accompanied by strong winds

In the northwest of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia there is a threat of strong winds this afternoon and evening. In southern Moravia, the gusts can reach speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour, warns the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) in a low-level warning issued today. In part of the Czech Republic, strong winds complicated transport and caused problems with power supplies already on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A cold front will pass over the Czech Republic from the west today, on which the westerly wind will temporarily intensify. Especially in the northwestern part of Bohemia, meteorologists expect gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour in places in the afternoon and evening. In Moravia and Silesia, similar values ​​will occur from today’s early evening to late evening. In southern Moravia, the wind can be even stronger, with gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour.

Meteorologists therefore advise people in threatened areas to secure windows, secure loosely stored objects or secure greenhouses. Motorists should take extra care when driving, and pedestrians who are at risk of being injured by loose objects and broken branches should also be careful. In the mountains, meteorologists recommend limiting hikes and not going especially to ridge areas.

Strong winds hit part of the Czech Republic already on Tuesday and Wednesday. He caused problems mainly in the east of Bohemia and in the north of the Olomouc region. There, the wind snapped trees that fell across roads, disrupting traffic and causing power line failures. In the Chrudim region, the power supply was interrupted on Wednesday night to approximately 2,000 customers. A passenger train ran into a fallen tree on the railway line between Hanušovice and Jindřichov in the Šumpers region on Tuesday afternoon. No one was injured, passengers transferred to a replacement bus.
