Holy Easter week is coming to its half, today is Maundy Thursday. Housewives, did you get up very early today to sweep the house before sunrise? And what did you have for breakfast today? Pastries with honey? If so, you shouldn’t get bitten by a snake or stung by a wasp this year. Don’t forget something green for lunch and ideally drink it with a green beer.

According to historical sources, today was a very important day. After Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem and Judas’ betrayal on Shrove Wednesday, two important events took place on this day. The first was Jesus’ Last Supper. It was the so-called Eucharist, which is thanksgiving to God. On this occasion, Christ wanted to summarize his life so far and invited his disciples to continue in his footsteps and organize masses.

At the supper, Jesus consecrated the wine and the bread, saying that the bread was his body and the wine his blood. He then gave the cup of wine together with the bread to his disciples. He also washed their feet at the last supper. This event is still remembered today by Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting The Last Supper, which is shrouded in many legends.

The second event of Maundy Thursday was Jesus’ capture, before which he still had time to pray in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Ceremonies for the faithful

On Maundy Thursday, ceremonies take place both in cathedrals and in parish churches. During the morning ceremonies, the bishops meet in the cathedrals and renew their vows. Then the oils are lit (baptismal, confirmation, in case of illness and last anointing).

What (not) to do on Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday was a day of forgiveness, when former repentant sinners were received back into the fold. But green is called Thursday by mistake. And this by corrupting the original German Greinen Donnerstag, which means “Weepy Thursday”, to Grünner Donnerstag, i.e. “Green Thursday”. In earlier times, on this day, housewives would get up before sunrise to sweep the entire house. The garbage was then taken to the crossroads to keep fleas out of the house. Somewhere the bell was rung with a mallet against the mortar to keep insects and mice out of the house. Farmers were advised to sow flax and peas on this day, because what was sown on Maundy Thursday prospered well.

Today, people should not quarrel with each other or borrow anything from anyone. As a reward, arguments should avoid us and money should find its way to us.

It was also a custom, and this custom still exists today, that the bishop washed the feet of his priests. It is a reference to Jesus’ gesture of humility towards the apostles shortly before his crucifixion.

The bells fly to Rome

Today the church bells will ring for the last time, then they will be silent until Holy Saturday, as they symbolically fly to Rome. Instead of bells, there are clappers and rattles.

Maundy Thursday predictions
– If Maundy Thursday is white, then the summer is warm.
– Sow peas on Maundy Thursday, don’t move the ground on Good Friday!

Today we should eat at least one green food, earlier on this day peas, cabbage, nettles and spinach were eaten a lot. Food prepared from these ingredients was supposed to guarantee people good health throughout the year.

How is green beer made?

Of course, good beer goes with such food. A number of breweries brew a special green beer for this day, which is created in the traditional way, only herbal infusion is added to the wort kettle along with the hops during boiling, which is created by infusing several types of herbs, including nettle, in hot water. Just added herbs will give the beer a green color. To some, green beer may seem slightly unattractive or spoiled or artificial. Make no mistake, this is no “kekel”, but a beer delicacy. To achieve the typical green color, quality natural ingredients with a slightly herbal flavor are often used. Specifically, it is a special infusion of green herbs, which gives green beer not only a green color, but also a pleasantly bitter taste.

“I haven’t had green beer yet.”

“I haven’t had green beer yet, and maybe I’ll have some,” told the editors of Drbna Petr Janousek from Jihlava.

On the contrary, Olga Landtová has already tasted green beer. “I did it for the first time last year and I really liked it, this year I don’t know if it will work out yet, but I wouldn’t mind going to it, it’s just that we have a bit of a problem where to go,” he shrugs his shoulders Olga Landtová from Brtnice in Jihlavska.
