At least four people died and 60 were injured in Wednesday’s earthquake on the island of Taiwan. Dozens of buildings were damaged, and authorities also issued a tsunami warning.
Updated 9:50 – The earthquake reached a magnitude of 7.2, its epicenter was located about 18 kilometers from the coast of the island at a depth of 35 kilometers. The tremors, which local authorities said were the strongest in 25 years, claimed seven lives, according to local media. Three of them are tourists who died in a rockslide in Taroko National Park.
According to the latest information, there are also more than 700 injured. However, the authorities did not provide details about the severity of the injuries.

Authorities in Taiwan, Japan and the Philippines issued tsunami warnings, which were later withdrawn. The president of the island nation, Cai Jing-wen, said that the army will also provide support in removing the consequences of the disaster.
Dozens of buildings collapsed due to the tremors, especially in the south of the island. The entire island was hit by a power outage, and train services were also interrupted. Images of damaged buildings are circulating on social media, and according to local media, there may be survivors under the rubble. However, in the capital city of Taipei, the situation returned to normal rather quickly.
