Three days after the remains of French boy Emile Soleil were found along an Alpine trail not far from where he disappeared nine months ago, police have also found some of his clothing nearby. It was reported by the BBC server and the Daily Mail.

However, according to prosecutors, the mystery of the boy’s disappearance in July of last year is still not solved. His skull and several teeth were found on Saturday by a hiker about 25 minutes’ walk from the village where the boy was last seen.

Now the T-shirt, shoes and shorts that Emile was wearing on the day of his disappearance have been found. According to the BBC server, they were scattered over a small area about 150 meters from where his remains were found.

The cause of death remains unexplained

Details of the new find were brought by local prosecutor Jean-Luc Blanchon, who said that Emil’s death remains unexplained.

“These bones alone do not allow us to say what was the cause of Emil’s death,” he told reporters. “Between a fall, manslaughter, or murder, no theory can be considered more likely than the other.”

Two-and-a-half-year-old Emile went to his grandparents’ holiday home in a village of 25 inhabitants at an altitude of 1,200 meters on the slopes of the Massif des Trois-Evêchés. He was last seen by neighbors on Saturday 8 July at 5.15pm walking down the only street in the village wearing a yellow T-shirt and white shorts.

Despite a long and extensive search of the entire area, no trace of the boy was found. Two days after the reconstruction of his disappearance, which was attended by 17 people last Thursday, a woman walking just over a kilometer from Haut-Vernet came across his remains.

Why the remains were not discovered earlier is a mystery

The child’s skull has been sent to forensic teams for analysis. Sniffer dogs, soldiers, police and firefighters searched the area for more evidence. Jean-Luc Blanchon said at a news conference on Tuesday that the skull had “minor fractures and cracks” after the boy’s death, as well as bites from one or more animals.

“No antemortem trauma was observed on the skull,” he emphasized. He added that the remains were not buried in the ground. It remains a mystery why the boy’s skull and clothing were not discovered earlier. The rest of his remains have not yet been found.

When asked if the area where Émile’s remains were found had been searched before, Blachon said, according to the Daily Mail, that “yes, but not with drones or specialist dogs”.

He added: “At this time, we cannot say whether Emil’s body was already in the search area. I cannot say that every square meter was searched. The topography is difficult there, with steep slopes making observation difficult. July 2023 was also very hot, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius in the shade. This may have affected the effectiveness of tracking dogs and infrared cameras”.
