Gaza – The Palestinian movement Hamas insists on its conditions for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, including the withdrawal of the Israeli army from the territory. According to Reuters, the leader of the radical group, Ismail Hanija, stated this today.

In a televised speech, Haniyeh said that Hamas is insisting on its demands, which are a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory and the provision of humanitarian aid to the Palestinians. Furthermore, the movement demands that displaced Palestinians be allowed to return home, that the blockade of the Gaza Strip be lifted, that post-war reconstruction be ensured and that an “honorable agreement on the exchange of prisoners” be reached.

By the exchange of prisoners, Hanija had in mind the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons in exchange for the hostages who were abducted from Israel by Palestinian militants to the Gaza Strip during the October 7 terrorist attack.

Today, according to The Times of Israel (ToI), the Israeli war cabinet will hold virtual meetings. It is not clear, however, whether he will be involved in the development of negotiations for the release of the hostages.

Israel launched a military offensive in the Gaza Strip with the aim of completely destroying Hamas after a terrorist attack in October, in which militants of Hamas and its allies killed nearly 1,200 people on the Israeli border and dragged about 250 people into Palestinian territory. In the first and so far only ceasefire at the end of November, less than half of the hostages were released. Nearly 33,000 Palestinians have died in connection with Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip, according to Hamas-run authorities.
