According to CNN, Weinstein’s release has not yet been decided, as he was sentenced last year in Los Angeles to 16 years in prison for rape in his second trial involving the sexual abuse of a woman.
The court decided to overturn the verdict that helped launch the Me Too movement. He justified the decision by the fact that the judge had allowed prosecutors to present the testimony of women who claimed that Weinstein had abused them, even though he was not charged with these incidents.
The appeals court also said the judge compounded the error by allowing Weinstein to be questioned in a way that portrayed him in a highly damaging light. The correction of these so-called mistakes will be a new trial, the court said.
The Weinstein case broke out in June 2017, when The New York Times published an article, according to which Weinstein had sexually assaulted women. In 2020, Weinstein was convicted in New York of sexually assaulting former assistant and raping actress Jessica Mannov. In recent years, the public has accused him of sexually assaulting and abusing a dog by 80 women.
Formerly of the production companies Miramax and The Weinstein Company, according to their statements, he abused his influence for decades to put his victims in vulnerable positions. The Weinstein scandal triggered an avalanche of accusations against other famous women known as the MeToo movement.
