The young man, accompanied by his mother, allegedly confessed to attacking the leader of the Saxon Social Democratic Party (SPD) candidate. He did not give further details about the attack and due to his young age, he was not placed in custody. Under special conditions, he was allowed to go home after giving an explanation and will be questioned further in the presence of a lawyer, Bild reported.

The attack happened on Friday after 10 p.m. “Suddenly, three or four strangers appeared, insulted the entire team that was putting up the posters, and then they suddenly started beating him (Ecke) brutally,” said Henning Homan (44), head of the Saxon SPD, to BILD. The politician suffered serious injuries.

The attack was condemned by German politicians, including Chancellor Olaf Scholz. On Friday, there was also an attack on a 28-year-old assistant to the Greens, who, like Ecke, was hanging up promotional materials. The thugs beat and kicked him, injuring him. However, he was able to go home after outpatient treatment.

Destruction of stands and posters

In Dresden, the tense pre-election situation continued on Saturday. On Saturday afternoon, three people attacked the stand of the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD), which the party was using to campaign for the June European Parliament elections.

Two 23-year-old women and a 28-year-old man damaged a blackboard, posters and a table during the attack on the AfD stand, the police reported according to the DPA agency. Police arrested the suspects based on information from witnesses. They will be investigated for damaging another’s property.

The police also informed that a group of about 20 youths damaged the election posters of various political parties during the night of today. Following a report from a witness, the police caught a 17-year-old youth in the act of destroying a poster of the Left party.

Voters in Germany will decide on their next representatives in the European Parliament on June 9. Representatives of both the ruling and opposition parties warned that their members were facing a wave of physical and verbal attacks and called on the police to strengthen the protection of politicians at election rallies.
