One of the practical consequences of the war in Ukraine is, in addition to the admission of Sweden and Finland to the North Atlantic Alliance, the strengthening of NATO’s eastern wing. The number of rapid reaction troops there has increased since the beginning of the Russian invasion, and now the largest ever base of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Europe will be added to it. Its construction began in Romania.

The largest NATO base in Europe is being built on the Black Sea coast near the Romanian port of Constanta. When it is finished, it will have an area of almost three thousand hectares, which is about a third more than the US military base Ramstein in Germany. After all, the United States and NATO expect to move some people and equipment from there to Romania.

The base will be built on the basis of the existing military base, which bears the name of the head of the Romanian government from the 19th century, Mihailo Kogalničean. The United States of America has been using this base since the turn of the millennium.

In 2003, it was used to support the invasion of Iraq, for attacks against insurgents there, and according to some reports, even as a secret prison. Its importance increased even more after the Russian annexation of Crimea ten years ago.

Other foreign units began to take turns at the base. Now, in addition to the 82nd American Airborne Division, there are also 150 German soldiers with four Eurofighter planes.

The UN Security Council on Friday again failed to adopt a resolution calling for an end to fighting in the Gaza Strip

The US proposal requesting a cease-fire in Gaza did not pass the UN Security Council. It was rejected by China and Russia

But as far as the current expansion is concerned, the Romanian government has bought over two thousand hectares of land in the area and some work has already started. For example, access roads or energy infrastructure are being built.

By 2030, there should be ten thousand people at the base, but that number includes not only soldiers, but also family members. This corresponds to the idea of the base – it should basically be a small town with its own hospital, shops, kindergartens or housing.

But, of course, the expansion of military capacities is also expected, for example, a new landing strip for aircraft and fuel tanks are to be created.
