“That I’ll stop the plane? They laughed that it’s impossible, especially in America. But after two days I found a person who took me by plane,” the traveler Vojtěch Pechar alias Mullet describes his experiences on the trip across the United States. He crossed the continent without a single dollar of his own. Locals bought him lodging and food, and he is said to have experienced only one crisis: “I made a big mistake,” he admits in an interview.

“I hitchhiked in Croatia, Italy, Morocco and I wanted a bigger challenge. So I decided to do it without money and it worked out,” says Pechar about how he came up with the idea of flying to America and crossing it completely without money resources. He therefore hitchhiked the entire journey, sleeping either with those who offered it to him or outside and eating what anyone bought for him. “Someone let me sleep, someone invited me for a meal, others gave me a dollar to fend for myself,” describes the traveler, who said he only had about $200 with him in case of emergency. But he did not use the money.

Pechar is said to have “quite a sense” of who to get into the car with and who not. His own family was said to be rooting for him, but did not believe he would make the trip. And sometimes the local police officers discouraged him – for example, when he wanted to sleep in the forest and then hitchhike to Los Angeles. “They said: you can’t do that, it’s stupid. Someone will kill you or rob you,” recalls the traveler, who was said to have been driven by about 55 people along the 4,500-kilometer journey.

And when did the crisis come? “I decided to go down to the Grand Canyon for a little hike and had little food with me, which was a big mistake. I only had dried meat, so I knew I wasn’t going to starve, but eating only hummus for two days. And besides I ran out of water,” Pechar describes. However, he denies that he would ever take unnecessary risks on his journey. “The borders are elsewhere and I haven’t been to the border yet,” he claims.
