UN committee calls on Britain to drop deportation plan to Rwanda

--

The United Nations Human Rights Council on Thursday appealed to Great Britain to stop enforcing a law on the transfer of asylum seekers in Britain to Rwanda, Reuters news agency reports.

The Council further stated that it regrets the arrangements concluded with some third countries, especially Rwanda, on the transfer of asylum seekers. According to the Council, Britain’s efforts to continue despite a decision by the UK Supreme Court which condemned the bill as “incompatible with international law” are regrettable. She called on the British government to withdraw or cancel the bill to deport refugees to Rwanda.

Every year, thousands of people arrive in Britain in small inflatable boats across the English Channel and apply for asylum. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative government hopes the plan will act as a deterrent to people trying to reach Britain.

So far, the plan has met with setbacks when the UK High Court ruled the policy illegal last year. There is a risk that people who go to Rwanda could be sent back to their country of origin and their safety would be at risk.

Sunak’s government hopes to overcome the court’s objections and pass a law declaring Rwanda a safe country for asylum seekers. The standard will be debated again in parliament on April 15.
