TOwhen French President Emmanuel Macron declared at the Sorbonne in Paris seven years ago that the European Union must be sovereign, many people laughed at him, others sharply criticized him. Macron returned to the Sorbonne on Wednesday to deliver another speech on the future of Europe. During the aforementioned seven years, even his great opponents had to admit that he was right about many things. He still has it in the essentials.

What does it actually mean that the EU is supposed to be sovereign? According to Macron, in today’s world it is no longer possible for even the largest European countries such as Germany or France to take care of their own interests. These states – not to mention the smaller ones like the Czech Republic – will only be able to defend their interests – be sovereign – if they cooperate closely within the EU. For example, ODS MEP Alexandr Vondra came out strongly against it and wrote an Anti-Macron pamphlet. Today, he emphasizes that he has changed his mind and agrees with Macron in many respects.
