“The Russians will advance.” “The terrain is crazy.” True from Ukraine

--

Russian aggression against Ukraine continues to rage, and Ukrainians in the Sumy region appear to be fortifying and preparing for the impending spring and summer attack by Russian tyrants. According to the Kyiv Independent, a group of military officers, local police chiefs and border guards are considering how to strengthen the defense. At the moment, the defense is said to be about 3 kilometers deep, and the Ukrainians now want to strengthen it even more.

“We also need to keep the border secure from farmers,” quips the commander sarcastically at a meeting attended by the Kyiv Independent in late March, referring to farmers who keep violating the ban on planting in fields that the soldiers want to mine.

Military expert Mychailo Samus believes that if Russia tries to attack Kharkiv again, it could use attacks on the neighboring Sumy region to breach the city’s defenses.

“(The operation in the Sumy region) does not mean the direction of the main attack, but auxiliary strikes. They will have their own targets, just like February-March 2022,” Samus told the Kyiv Independent newspaper security and defense analyst with more than ten years of military service experience.

“Currently, the Russians do not have the capabilities (for the Kharkiv offensive). For now, they are just fantasies,” he added.

Western officials do not even believe that Russia is capable of launching a new Kharkiv offensive without major reinforcements, Bloomberg reported on April 16.

“If they theoretically launch an operation in Kharkiv, they will need at least 300,000 troops. Now it’s impossible for them to gather (troops) discreetly,” Samus said, noting that the intelligence would record every move.

In the Sumy region, the Ukrainians are said to be defending themselves with the help of drones, from which they drop bombs or grenades on the Russians, but sometimes they come across the fact that the supplied drones are not of the best quality and they need to be checked before deployment. “The terrain is crazy. We drop explosives (if it’s hard to attack with an FPV drone),” Dmytro Zinchenko, an unmanned instructor of the 117th Territorial Defense Brigade, said with a laugh.

Two weeks before his visit to the city of Sumy in late March, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine was building 1,240 miles of fortifications worth $520 million across three lines of defense. He pledged to complete construction “in a few months.”

The largest part, over 38 million dollars, is intended for the Sumy area.

According to Mrof the American newspaper Wall Street Journal but the Ukrainians should build a defense line faster. According to the newspaper’s server, they are now in a phase of war with the Russians, which is summed up by the cry: Kick, kick, kick!

“What is happening right now is what Russia has been preparing for for a long time. It gathered enough forces and resources to push on different axes at once,” Maksym Zhorin, deputy commander of the 3rd Assault Brigade, told WSJ.

Ukraine’s top military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi is said to be betting on drones, patience and discipline in the fight against the Russians. About his battle tactics informs Kyiv Post server. “Discipline in the less well-managed units became the focus of the staff during Syrsky’s service, and sometimes previously untouchable heads rolled,” the server wrote about it.

And how do they fight under the leadership of the Syrian unit?

“(Ukrainians) leave the position and start hitting it with everything possible. They don’t shoot much at all between battles and it gives the impression that they have nothing to shoot with. But when they strike and attack one of their (Russian) positions, they drop everything from 120mm shells (mortars) to 155mm shells (NATO standard howitzers). And many FPV drones – from two to four attacking each of the soldiers to get a certain kill,” the server wrote.

In a wide-ranging interview with Ukraine’s state-run Ukrinform news agency on March 29, Syrskyi said his goal in maximizing the use of drones was not only to reduce Ukrainian casualties, but to reduce the number of troops needed on the front lines and to give breathing space to those who served on the front lines. line two years they could rest and leave.

Washingtonian However, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) warnedthat Ukrainians have a problem. The Russians managed to advance near Novobakhmutivka and there is a threat that the aggressors’ army will advance in several places and the Ukrainians will have to retreat behind the next line of defense.

“Geolocation imagery released on April 25 shows that Russian forces have advanced from Novobachmutivka to central Solovyov (northwest of Avdijivka) after possibly capturing all of Novobachmutivka during the night of April 24-25,” ISW noted.

The latest Russian gains northwest of Avdijivka were said to have been relatively quick, but still relatively marginal – since April 18, Russian forces advanced no more than five kilometers in depth, the institute described the situation. But the advance northwest of Avdijivka, analysts say, provides Russian forces with more stable positions from which to continue a wider penetration.

“Russian forces could further stabilize their position northwest of Avdijivka and advance further west of Ocheretyn, making positions along the Berdychi-Semenivka-Umansk line increasingly difficult for Ukrainian forces to hold,” the institute warned, adding that the Ukrainian command could decide to withdraw Ukrainian forces further west if it deems Russian tactical gains in the area too threatening to Ukraine’s current positions.

“Russian forces are likely to continue to make tactical gains northwest of Avdiyivka, but these gains are unlikely to translate into an operationally significant penetration, let alone cause the collapse of Ukrainian defenses west of Avdiyivka,” ISW also wrote.
