Pthe project of the factory, which should contribute tens of billions of crowns annually to the Czech GDP in the future, has overcome one of the most bureaucratically complex phases of the permit procedure. The future line for the production of manganese, a key raw material for the production of batteries, planned in Chvaletice, received a positive environmental impact assessment, known by the abbreviation EIA.

The project, which the European Union describes as strategic and in which the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is also investing, can thus move to the phase of more specific technical planning in order to obtain a building permit for the factory and its connected railway siding near the Chvaletice power plant. Manganese is to be extracted here from the old heaps of a long-closed pyrite mine. In the EU, it will be the only relevant source of this precious metal and, crucially, it will be the only place in the Union where it will be processed. More than ninety percent of the world’s manganese is otherwise processed in China.
