POLITICAL CORRIDOR: Should Prague help people in the fight against high energy prices? Representatives | Politics | News | Prague Gossip

--

Higher advance payments for energy, as well as arrears. The people of Prague have to deal with more expensive energy prices, and even if they try to save, many of them have problems paying. Should the city help people in need with energy? We asked the representatives.

Question: Should the capital help vulnerable groups in the fight against high energy prices? If so, which way? His options are limited.

Patrik Nacher (YES)

To some extent yes, it would be ideal in cooperation with the state. Because energy prices have little to do with municipal politics. I have already suggested that, for example, the municipal company Pražská plynárenská should have a special service or product for people who are in financial need, who receive some kind of support of this type. They would have a special tariff that would help them in the current situation. Help of this type is more bearable and sustainable in the long term than letting those people fall. Then the state and the city can come out more expensive on additional costs in connection with insolvencies or foreclosures.

Adam Scheinherr (Prague To Yourself)

The purpose of helping vulnerable households with high energy prices is to prevent the loss of housing, which is always more expensive and more difficult to solve for society as a result. Already in the last election period, we established the Social Endowment Fund, which can solve such situations, and we also provided it with sufficient financial coverage. It is not just a passive aid in the form of an energy allowance, but a contribution to reduce the household’s energy consumption.

Kateřina Arnotová (STAN)

The state should primarily deal with the support of vulnerable population groups within the existing system of social support, for example by increasing the allowance for housing. The city’s help in this direction would be rather non-systemic. Floods or other disasters, such as covid, are something else. There, the city can help operationally, but in these cases, which are not impactful, the city should not replace the state.

Daniel Mazur (Pirates)

In a situation of massive price increases in 2022 and 2023, Prague helped the people of Prague through an aid package. Electricity prices on the stock exchange have already reached the pre-crisis level, so in our opinion the need to support with energy payments has already passed. However, the people of Prague this year can use the package of immediate assistance to the people of Prague to cover the costs associated with inflation. We, as Prague, are ready to react operatively to possible new crisis situations, as we have been able to do in previous years.

Milan Urban (SPD)

In the short term, it is obviously necessary to help vulnerable groups in the fight against high energy prices, but Prague’s resources are not inexhaustible. The primary reason for these high prices is the Green Deal, the energy exchange and emission allowances. This is the task of the government in Brussels and especially the European Commission and the European Parliament. These three harmful articles need to be changed. First, in the EP elections in June, elect parties defending national interests, in the Czech Republic it is only the SPD, and next year elect a government other than a coalition of five. There is no other way to improve.
