Easter opens the tourist season in Prague, monuments will remain open longer

The capital with the arrival Easter holidays is about to welcome the tourist season. Starting from March 27th, the Novomlýn water tower opens its doors after the winter break, the historic tram number 42 runs seven days a week and the opening hours of the monuments managed by Prague City Tourism are extended. Visitors are also moved by the official guide services under the heading Pragensia viva, which celebrate the theme of transport in the spring. From April, they will introduce a tour with virtual reality and other attractions.

“With the arrival of spring in Prague, a new tourist season begins, and the metropolis will welcome visitors from all over the world, but especially domestic visitors, who are increasingly coming to the capital, and we are very happy about this increasing trend. According to the latest data, they make up a fifth of all visitors to the metropolis,” describing Jiří Pospíšildeputy for culture and tourism.

The opening hours of the Prague towers under the administration of Prague City Tourism are shifted from Easter, and those interested usually have an hour longer to explore the wonderful views from, for example, the Mostek towers or the St. Nicholas City Belfry. “We are ready for the tourist season and, as usual, we expect great public interest in visiting Prague’s monuments. I believe that we will continue to follow the trend of increasing domestic tourism. To our delight, the metropolis is being discovered more and more not only by foreign tourists, but also domestic ones,” he says Francis Ciprochairman of the board of Prague City Tourism.

From today until 8 p.m., those interested have the opportunity to look into the Astronomical Tower and the Klementin Baroque Library or the chapel of the Old Town Hall, where they will find a display case with a scale model of the Marian Column by the sculptor Karel Kronych and the architect Miroslav Krátký. Visitors can find information about the opening hours of objects managed by Prague City Tourism on the website prague.eu/prazskeveze.

The iconic Novomlýn water tower from the second half of the 17th century, which once supplied water to 50 fountains in the vicinity of New Town, can be visited at Easter after a long winter break, when it was closed to the public. The last time it was opened exceptionally for the people of Prague on New Year’s Day and welcomed almost 900 visitors. For example, a tour of the tower can be combined with a visit to the Easter markets. Citizens can find their way around all Easter events in the metropolis on a special website prague.eu/easter.

Together with Prague, the spring block of the program of walks around the capital is also coming to life, as the director of Pragensia viva explains Pavla Bartásková: “The upcoming events will take place in the rhythm of movement and traffic. They will be new individual walks with virtual reality, which we will launch during April. Thanks to special glasses, history literally comes alive at several stops, be it medieval or recent from the 20th century. We are also planning walks in connection with the approaching 50-year anniversary of the Prague metro, as well as tours of Prague, which include Nordic walking or cycling.”

The arrival of Easter is also associated with increased availability of the historic tram line No. 42, which already transports passengers every day. It enables visitors to get to know Prague in a stylish and sustainable way

Among the most visited monuments managed by Prague City Tourism this year are the popular Petřín Lookout, the Old Town Hall and the Mirror Maze on Petřín. The number of visitors to the Petřín Lookout from January to March has already exceeded the number of visitors from the same period last year by 16%, with more than 100,000 visitors. The Mirror Maze in Petřín also recorded an increase of 8%. With the arrival of spring weather, an increased interest in visiting Prague’s monuments can still be expected.
