They switched patients on Bulovka. A healthy woman miscarried because of it

--

While the pregnant woman went for a routine check-up, the doctors were supposed to perform a professional procedure, the so-called curettage, which is done in case of uterine disease. It is also used to artificially terminate a pregnancy.

But according to television, there was a mix-up, as a result of which the pregnant woman lost her baby.

The accident is under investigation. The director of the hospital, Jan Kvaček, and the head of the gynecology-obstetrics clinic, Michal Zikán, also informed Minister Válek about Monday’s event.

Ministry: The hospital will compensate the woman

“The Ministry of Health expresses its deep regret to the patient and the entire family. There was an inexcusable failure of the human factor, and the culprits are removed from service,” department spokesman Ondřej Jakob told Novinkám.

“The Bulovka University Hospital has apologized to the family and is ready to provide the patient with appropriate compensation,” he added. The resort wants to continue to solve the situation and requests ongoing information about how the hospital will continue to proceed with the employees who failed.

The hospital also confirmed the incident to the media. “On Monday, March 25, an adverse event occurred at our Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic. According to findings so far, as a result of serious violations and non-compliance with internal regulations by the employees concerned, an operation was started on an incorrectly identified patient,” Bulovka’s press spokesperson Eva Stolejda Libigerová told the server.

Curettage is performed in women who are not pregnant and suffer from gynecological problems, such as irregular bleeding or are suspected of having a uterine tumor. It involves “scraping” the endometrium or the lining of the cervix with a sharp instrument.

The whole event is extremely suspicious, because the procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia, or epidural anesthesia or local anesthetic is applied in the area of the cervix.

The doctor informs the patient in advance about anesthesia, the person concerned must be familiar with it. At the same time, this is preceded by necessary preparations in which the patient actively participates. Specifically, before the curettage, the woman must be given a drug that dilates the cervix several hours in advance so that the procedure can be performed.

It is not clear when exactly the mix-up occurred. However, none of the stakeholders, including the anesthesiologist or gynecologist, noticed this.

The police will also investigate the incident. “We have not received any notification regarding this incident. However, based on information from the media, we will deal with the whole matter,” Prague police spokeswoman Eva Kropáčová told Novinka.
