In total, the Czech Republic has so far granted almost 600,000 temporary protection statuses to war refugees from Ukraine.
However, this is the cumulative number of all authorizations granted since the beginning of the war in Ukraine in 2022. According to the most recent data, there are currently 338,736 people in the republic with temporary protection granted.
Around 320,000 people applied for the extension of temporary protection for another year until March 2025, the remaining less than 19,000 represent people who were granted temporary protection this year.
On average, around 1,300 new temporary protections are still granted each week.
According to Pavla Novotná from the Ministry of the Interior, the data show that 70 percent of people are of working age, and women predominate. Children represent 26 percent and seniors four percent.
The Ministry of the Interior noted that approximately 55,000 people did not extend their temporary protection this year and it therefore expired.
“We believe that, just like last year, it will mostly be a departure to Ukraine, but this is not supported by any data,” said Novotná.
Most people are found in big cities. In terms of the number of inhabitants, the highest share is in the village of Hodonín in the district of Blansko.
“There isn’t any fundamental maturation, no concentration. The coverage is really widespread,” commented Novotná on the data.
War refugees with temporary protection had until March 15 to apply online for registration to extend temporary protection, then they have until the end of September to appear at the Ministry of the Interior workplace.
