The number of representatives of the Pilsen region will increase from the current 45 to 55 after the autumn regional elections. This is due to a significant increase in the number of the region’s population as of January 1 this year. Regional councilors approved it at their meeting. The regional councilors made the decision on the basis of the Act on Regions, the section of which sets the conditions for the number of regional representatives.

“The decisive factor is the number of inhabitants of the region as of January 1 of the year in which the elections are held. As of January 1, 2024, the Plzeň Region had 631,166 inhabitants according to informative reports compiled by the Ministry of the Interior. It follows that the number of elected representatives for the autumn regional elections will rise to 55,” said regional spokeswoman Eva Mertlová. For the previous election period, the decisive number was 589,899 inhabitants as of January 1, 2020, when the last regional elections were held. Information about the increase in the number of representatives will be posted on the official board within two days.

In regions with up to 600,000 inhabitants, according to the law, the council has 45 members, which now applies to the Vysočina region, Karlovy Vary, Liberecký, Královéhradecký, Pardubický and Zlín regions in addition to Plzeňský. In regions with over 600,000 and up to 900,000 inhabitants, the council has 55 members, this applies to the South Bohemian, Ústí and Olomouc regions. There are 65 representatives in regions with more than 900,000 inhabitants, these are the regions of Středočeský, Jihomoravský and Moravskoslezský. Prague also has a sixty-five-member council.
