Breathtaking images and videos will be used by astronomers in the Czech Republic to discuss the reduction of light pollution.
It is not necessary to have illuminated monuments at three in the morning when most people are asleep. There is no need for empty department store parking lots to shine into the night
“Seeing a real clear night sky is a mystical experience. If we turned off all the lights at night, we would marvel at the beauty of thousands of stars overhead. Unfortunately, modern people have no idea how great beauty is,” Jiří Dušek, director of the Brno Observatory, told Novinka.
They will show the fans a flood of stars
Astronomers are now preparing twenty videos from Mount Paranal for observatory fans, in which they will present a perfectly clear sky, whether day or night.

They are preparing a film documentary about clouds for next year. The observatory in Chile is located at an altitude of 2,635 meters above sea level, so you can directly observe how clouds form in the space below the observatory.
The expedition wants to contribute to the public discussion about light smog in cities and how much the excess of lights not only affects urban greenery, but also nature in general and, ultimately, people.
Many lights are used unnecessarily
According to experts, it would be possible to immediately turn off up to a third of the lights in urban buildings without any problems, because they are currently lit even where it is completely unnecessary.
“Of course we need night lighting, but let the lamps shine only where it is needed. It is not necessary to have illuminated monuments at three in the morning when most people are asleep. There is no need for empty department store parking lots to shine into the night. There are many similar examples,” said Dušek.

According to him, street lights can be replaced with more modern and environmentally friendly ones. Photocells can be installed on them in many places. It ensures that the lights only come on when really necessary.
Public lighting is now being reduced mainly in an effort to save on energy. E.g. Blansko has already turned off a third of the street lamps.
An experiment took place in Brno, during which all 40,000 lamps were switched off. Experts have found out how well store windows or parking lots light up into the night. The research will be used by the Ministry of the Environment to change night lighting in the Czech Republic.
There is too much light in the cities, the new device will help turn off the unnecessary ones

At the Brno University of Technology, a team of scientists is devising a device that will help each village determine what can be turned off at night.
“The Paranal sky is pierced by countless stars, among which the Milky Way winds in the form of a canopy, with dark patches of giant clouds of gas and dust. The earth’s atmosphere here is not only exceptionally clear, but also calm. The stars do not twinkle at you, even the faintest ones are visible all the way to the horizon. Artificial satellites and sporadic meteors disappearing every now and then. In the morning, a cone of zodiacal light will be added – one of the most fragile light shows offered by the Solar System,” Dušek described his experience at the European Southern Observatory.
In the Czech Republic, you can almost experience something similar in the so-called dark sky areas, which are selected locations in the Beskydy Mountains, in the Jizera Mountains and near Manětín in the Pilsen Region.
