According to the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC), around 2,250 flights are scheduled to depart or arrive from a French airport on Thursday. The previous day there were almost 5,200.

To match available staff to the volume of traffic, France’s civil aviation authority asked airlines to cancel three out of four flights departing or arriving from Orly airport, France’s second largest.

The measure also affects 55 percent of flights at the largest Charles de Gaulle Airport near Paris, 65 percent of flights at Marseille-Provence Airport and 45 percent of flights at all other French airport hubs.

The SNCTA union’s announcement Wednesday morning that a deal had been reached raised hopes that the cuts would not be so extensive after all. But it was too late. In addition, three other trade unions of air traffic controllers continued to be on strike alert.

According to the DGAC, however, the delay of the flights that the airlines eventually operate is only moderate. Orly airport is the most affected, with an average delay of 44 minutes on arrival and 26 minutes on departure.

“Hundreds of thousands of passengers have been left in limbo,” said Airlines for Europe, Europe’s main airline association. It regrets the more than 2,000 canceled flights, as well as 1,000 flights that are at risk of having to be diverted at the cost of “delays and other disruptions”.

According to the website of the Prague airport, the arrival from Paris to Prague at 2:10 p.m., 7:05 p.m. and 7:40 p.m. is cancelled. So there will be no flights from Prague to Paris at 2:55 p.m., 7:55 p.m. and 8:20 p.m.
