Mutual matches between the Czech Republic and Turkey in football – Czech Republic vs. Turkey

After Portugal and Georgia, we have another strong opponent in the form of Turkey in the group stage of the European Championship. The Czech footballers will face the Turks on June 26 in Hamburg. The fight at the Volksparkstadion will already be the twelfth match between these two national teams.

We faced the Turkish national team twice at the Euros, we played two matches with them as part of the qualification for the European Championship, and we met Turkey seven times in friendly matches.

Thus, it is one of our most frequent rivals. The balance of mutual matches is balanced. Turkey enjoyed victory in five duels, the Czech Republic dominated five matches and only one match ended in a draw.

Football Czech Republic vs. Turkey: balance sheet, H2H and statistics

Our era of mutual matches with Turkey started in the 90s. In 1994, we beat the opponent for the first time in a friendly match (4:1). In 1996, we beat Soka again in a preparatory duel (3:0).

It must be added that the same year we took a great second place at the EC in England. In 2003, the third out-of-competition race followed, which brought ours the highest ever win against Turkey (4:0).

In 2006, we drew 2:2 in another friendly. Two years later, the Czech Republic lost to Turkey in the European Championship group stage, which ultimately meant the end of the tournament for us.

In 2010-13, we played two more friendly matches against the Turkish team, in which both teams scored one win each. The same situation was repeated in the qualification group for the European Championship 2016, where we first won 2:1 on the soil of Turkey and then lost 0:2 at home in the return match.

After the successfully managed qualification, we got Turkey into the European Championship 2016 group, unfortunately we lost 0:2 to our opponent at the big tournament and again we didn’t even get to the round of 16. The very last match between each other took place in November 2022, when Turkey won over the Czech Republic in a friendly match 2:1.

The Czech Republic’s highest win against Turkey – a friendly international match from the 2002/03 season

He is behind the highest victory over Turkey in history strong selection from the 2002/03 season. We do not need to introduce names like Petr Čech, Karel Poborský, Tomáš Rosický, Vladimír Šmicer or Jan Koller.

In addition, coach Karel Brückner was at the helm of the Czech national team, who is currently still one of the most successful coaches of our national team. The now 84-year-old coach took the team to three major tournaments in a row (ME 2004, WC 2006 and ME 2008).

The Czechs set a record against Turkey in a friendly match on April 20, 2003 in Teplice. The decision was made after 27 minutes, when our footballers were already leading 3:0. Rosicky opened the scoring in the 2nd minute. Koller followed it up in the 21st minute and Šmicer added the third goal six minutes later. Baroš ended the opponent’s demolition in the 38th minute. The final score of 4-0 remains our greatest triumph to this day over the Turkish selection.

A year later, Karel Brückner’s men presented themselves at the EC in Portugal, where they sensationally reached the semi-finals, in which they unfortunately lost to the future winner of the entire tournament – Greece.

Czech Republic’s highest wins over Turkey

  1. Czech Republic – Turkey 4:0 (Friendly international match, season 2002/03)
  2. Czech Republic – Turkey 4:1 (Friendly international match, season 1993/94)
  3. Czech Republic – Turkey 3:0 (Friendly international match, season 1995/96)

The highest loss of the Czech Republic against Turkey – qualification for the European Championship 2016 and European Championship 2016 in France

Our highest defeats against Turkey are not shameful. We are up against an opponent they have lost by two goals twice in history and very shortly after each other. The first match took place as part of the qualification for the European Championship in France. The Czechs first won in Turkey narrowly 2:1, but lost 0:2 at home against the same team. Inan and Calhanoglu prevailed in the duel. However, we finished the qualification in first place and won seven matches out of ten.

We played the next match with Turkey eight months later at the EC in France. Although the Czech team had more scoring opportunities in the match, the opponent showed more efficiency in the final phase and won again by two goals after goals from Yilmaz and Tufan.

In conclusion, we must mention match between Turkey and the Czech Republic at the Euro 2008. We lost by a narrow goal there. But considering that it was the decisive third match in the group, in which we also led by two goals fifteen minutes before the end, the final loss is probably the most annoying in the history of the matches against Turkey.

  2. Turkey – Czech Republic 2:0 (ME 2016, group stage)
  3. Turkey – Czech Republic 3:2 (ME 2008, group stage)
