The D1 highway near Bohumín in Karvinska in the direction of Poland was closed for almost the entire Saturday due to this accident. One person was killed and two others were injured. Firefighters managed to open the highway after 9 p.m. on Saturday evening, and only in one lane. A special crane helped them remove the crashed cars and the tank.
The accident happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at 376.5. km. According to the Moravian-Silesian police spokeswoman Eva Michalíková, the driver of the tractor transporting the historic T 34 tank should have stopped on the highway in the right lane, before the exit to Bohumín, where he was most likely waiting for the barrier to be lifted in order to pass.

“The driver of a Škoda Fabia passenger car also stopped behind the tractor. However, the driver of the truck driving behind them, who was transporting passenger cars, apparently did not pay attention to driving and without any braking distance he ran into the stationary Škoda. Two men were traveling in it,” explained the police spokeswoman.
The news found out that it was an escort vehicle of a tank that was transported to Saturday’s historic military event in Bohumín – Kopytov. The owners of the tank were sitting in the fabia: the seventy-five-year-old driver, who unfortunately did not survive the accident, and his twenty-four-year-old son. He ended up in a very serious condition in the Ostrava University Hospital, where he was transported by a rescue helicopter.
Another man escaped the accident with minor injuries.
