Millions of Indians celebrated Holi, the Hindu festival of colors, on Monday. The inhabitants of the Asian country celebrate the arrival of spring every year with cultural and religious significance, informs the AP agency.

Usually celebrated in March in India, Nepal, and other South Asian countries, this holiday celebrates love and marks a time of rebirth and rejuvenation. But also time to accept positive energy and get rid of the negative.

A tradition that is an unimaginable part of Hóli is going out into the streets in white clothes and throwing colored powders, which leave behind a kaleidoscope of colors and joy. This is followed by celebrations with music, dancing and food.

Holi is celebrated at the end of winter and beginning of spring, on the last full moon day of the Hindu lunar month of Falgun. The date of the holiday changes depending on the lunar cycle. It usually falls in March, and this year it is celebrated today, March 25.

On the day of the holiday, entire streets and towns are filled with people throwing colored powder into the air. Various things are allowed on this day. Some throw balloons filled with colored water from the roofs and others use spray guns.

The colors used are not random. Blue represents the skin color of Lord Krishna, while green symbolizes spring and rebirth.

Red symbolizes marriage or fertility, while both red and yellow – commonly used in rituals and ceremonies – symbolize good fortune.

The celebrations include a number of special foods, of which the most popular food during Holi is “gujia”, a flaky, deep-fried sweet pastry filled with curd, nuts and dry fruits.

Holi celebrations also serve ‘thandai’, a cold drink made from a mixture of almonds, fennel seeds, rose petals, poppy seeds, saffron, milk and sugar.

On the streets, one often hears the slogan “Holi hai!”, which means “It’s Holi!”. Bollywood movies also helped popularize the holiday.
