Unsightly steam pipes will disappear from Liberec. Modernization will help to maintain the price of heat

Teplárna Liberec has started the last phase of the GreenNet project, within the framework of which, over the next two years, it will carry out an extensive modernization of the thermal energy distribution backbone network, consisting in the replacement of the existing steam water pipelines with hot water ones.

While in the past the Město distribution branch was replaced, it is now the turn of the Textilana branch leading through the area of the former textile company towards Králův Háj, Broumovská and Kunratická housing estates, and Vratislavice, which supplies heat mainly to Hanychov, Doubí, Vesec, Rochlice, Zelené údolí and just Vratislavice nad Nisou.

The goal of the project is primarily to reduce heat losses and increase the efficiency of heat supplies, which will subsequently contribute to the long-term stabilization of heat prices for customers connected to the central supply system. “At the same time, the heat pipes will be more in line with both current and future trends and the demands of connected customers. The modernization of the infrastructure will allow us to use resources more efficiently and provide our customers with a reliable and ecological supply of heat,” said Jan Sedláček, chairman of the board of Teplárna Liberec, adding that steam from Liberec will disappear after the completion of the project. “The entire project will take place outside the heating season, when only hot water is taken and there is no need for heating. Energy consumption is significantly lower,” he added.

The Liberec heating plant supplies heat to almost 13,000 households, mainly in Liberec housing estates, more than 120 customers from the tertiary sector and a dozen industrial enterprises. It is technologically connected to the adjacent Termizo waste thermal treatment facility, which provides it with more than two-thirds of the energy needed for heat production.

The GreenNet II and III projects include, among other things, the replacement of 24 kilometers of distribution lines and the updating of 85 exchange and transmission stations. Part of the investment is also the modernization of the heating plant itself and the municipal waste incinerator Termizo, which supplies the heating plant with hot steam. The costs have climbed over a billion crowns, it should be finished in the fall of next year.

The total value of this investment exceeds one billion crowns, and the projected completion of the project is planned for the fall of 2025. “The investment will be partially covered by a subsidy from the National Recovery Plan, the main part of the finances will come from the funds of the European investment group Cube Infrastructure Managers, our new owner. Without his support, we would not be able to implement such an investment in a long-term sustainable method of heat distribution,” explained Jörg Lϋdorf, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Enetiqa and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Teplárny Liberec.

The modernization of hot water distribution networks will reduce losses during heat transport by 25%, at the same time there will be a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a reduction in the dependence of heat production and natural gas. Most of the unsightly steam pipes will also disappear, and it is expected that the greater part of the hot water pipes will be buried underground. “It will bring a stabilized heat price to our citizens as users of the heating plant, because the heating plant will heat more efficiently. And thanks to the fact that the unsightly pipes will disappear, the public space will be neater,” said Deputy Mayor for Technical Administration and Information Technology Jiří Šolc.

Replacing the steam pipeline with a hot water pipeline will enable a more efficient, economical and ecological connection of new customers to the heating plant, but at the same time it will open the door for new development projects, companies and institutions. The heating plant plans to build four pressurized hot water tanks, while Termizo is installing a new turbine that will enable more efficient use of excess heat, increasing the amount of electricity produced from waste.

“GreenNet is not just an investment in infrastructure, it is our commitment to the planet and future generations. We believe that together with our partners and the citizens of the city of Liberec, we can achieve positive changes and contribute to a more sustainable and healthier environment for all of us,” emphasized Sedláček.

Modernization cannot be done without construction work. “It will be challenging. We have issued many so-called traffic engineering measures, and we are trying to ensure that the most demanding excavation work in the most exposed locations is done during the holidays, when there is half the traffic in Liberec,” added Šolc.
