Ireland will join South Africa’s referral to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over what it says is genocide by Israel in the Gaza Strip. Irish Foreign Minister Micheál Martin informed about this on Wednesday.

According to Reuters, this is the strongest expression of Irish concerns about the consequences of Israeli military operations, which the Jewish state wants to use to eliminate the Palestinian Hamas movement in response to the October terrorist attack.

Ireland’s foreign minister said Israel’s military intervention, which left innocent civilians dead, “represents a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law on a mass scale”. According to him, therefore, Dublin intends to participate in the proceedings, which began in December with the submission of a South African initiative.

South Africa claims that Israel’s actions have the character of genocide, as they are committed with the specific intention of destroying the Palestinians in Gaza. Israel contested this claim in court.

In late January, the ICJ issued a preliminary injunction ordering Israel to take all steps to prevent genocide and improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. The decision was welcomed by a number of Arab and European countries.
