The famous Geländewagen, i.e. the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, has been sold in the W463 generation since 2018. The automaker has therefore prepared a small modernization for it, which on the one hand introduces a new designation W465 and on the other hand does not please fans of eight-cylinder engines.

Namely, the version marked G 500 in Europe and G 550 in the USA will be powered by a three-liter in-line six-cylinder, equipped with a classic turbocharger and an electric compressor, instead of the four-liter eight-cylinder M176. The AMG G 63 version with the eight-cylinder remains, fans of the black tank gun can choose the new G 450d version. All three motors are connected to a mild hybrid system that works with a voltage of 48 V.

In terms of appearance, the radiator grille and bumpers have changed. The A-pillars, spoiler at the rear end of the roof and insulating materials were also modified. The developers took these things from the upcoming electric version and are supposed to ensure better acoustic comfort on board.

In the interior, infotainment has changed slightly, now all models have the latest version of the MBUX system with two 12.3″ displays. Infotainment offers better functions for off-road driving under the collective name Offroad Cockpit. Information is shown on the display in front of the driver and on the central display.

There are a number of other comfort features, such as keyless access, tempered cup holders, Burmester 3D surround sound system or an entertainment system for rear seat passengers. And in addition, you can also choose from the catalogs of special surcharges in the Manufaktur personalization program.

First-class technology remains

The standard equipment includes new adaptive shock absorbers, capable of stabilizing the tilt and inclination of the car and automatically limiting the movements of the body. “Adaptive Adjustable Damper components are designed to withstand extreme conditions such as high water pressure, driving through mud, flying rocks and rough dirt,” the press release assures that the “gacha” remains a tenacious car.

All variants remain permanent all-wheel drive, handled by a multi-plate clutch. The distribution of the torque between the axles is in the ratio of 40:60 in standard situations, the clutch can be firmly engaged with the button without the possibility of different speeds of the individual output shafts. There is also a reduction gear, which, according to the press release, can also be shifted while driving; it is possible to switch from a standard gear to a reduction gear up to a speed of 40 km/h, back up to a speed of 70 km/h.

In addition, the cars also have button-operated inter-axle differential locks, which can be switched on even while driving and for standard and reduction gearing. When closed, the car automatically switches to off-road “Rock” driving mode.

For driving in difficult terrain, the “géčko” also offers a ground clearance of at least 241 mm, a wading capacity of 700 mm, up to 100% gradeability, the highest lateral tilt of 35° and approach angles of 31° at the front and 30° at the rear.
