He is converting a restaurant in Olomouc into apartments. He’s not the first. Pubs are disappearing from the countryside

--

Entrepreneurs in the hospitality industry and elsewhere in the periphery have already reacted in a similar way. A number of once famous businesses in the municipalities surrounding Olomouc and on the outskirts of the city are closed.

Restaurant Gól will reopen, the brewing group is interested. What will be tapped?

“People gradually stopped going. Although we are in a good place, we were the only ones cooking, but it just couldn’t go on any longer,” lamented the owner of the property, Pavel Piňos, about the end of the restaurant that had been operating in Dub nad Moravou for over 30 years.

He observed the change since the covid pandemic. “People’s mentality has changed. People go to the pub less, and not only for economic reasons,” he pointed out.

The business on the busy street closed after the main pilgrimage “Na Andílka” in Dub. The owner evaluated the investment in the conversion of the building into smaller rental apartments as an interesting opportunity.

“There is a hunger for housing. I can certainly rent it, albeit for less than in Olomouc, but it will still be worth something. Amazon opened, one pickup route will go through Dub. Olomouc, where rents are high, is easily accessible for potential buyers,” he described the plan.

The closure of a well-known business and the only restaurant where food was served at noon did not make the management of the township happy.

“We’re sorry because she was good. It operated for over 30 years. They are no longer regulars who went daily after work or around the news, many of them have died. Young people don’t live like this anymore, they have other activities,” noted Ivo Čečman.

They converted a pub into housing elsewhere, for example in Bohuslavice. The only one in the village. Only the seasonal business on the playground works.

Pubs shorten their opening hours

According to Luboš Jadrníček from the Jadrníček Brewery in Náměšt na Hané, a number of businesses in the countryside have closed down in recent years. But there is no threat of another wave of closures. The survivors proceeded to reduce their operating hours. Somewhere significantly.

“While they used to be open seven days a week, today they are only open on Fridays and weekends. A number of pubs had employees, that is no longer true either. They became family businesses,” he described the development in the countryside.

Even in his well-known establishment in Náměšt na Hané, he observes that men after sporting activities do not go out as often as before. Draft beer became more expensive after the VAT increase in January, as did the vast majority of beer producers in the Czech Republic.

“We had to raise the price by four crowns. The state thinks it will collect more, but it doesn’t. We agree with the innkeepers on that. Businesses have reduced their opening hours and guests are drinking less beer,” he noted.

Horka: two out of five pubs

A number of village businesses have closed down in Olomouc in recent years.

“The company was eventually bought by the Vietnamese. They made honey duck and other specialties. However, there was no response, so they closed. Hopefully they will open again for the season,” described the situation, the mayor of Horní Loděnice, Gustav Repaň.

Several restaurants in Olomouc closed with the new year. For example, a stylish establishment on Roosevelt Street, where instead of bar stools there are real motorcycles, January 2023.

Several pubs closed in Olomouc. Others have restricted traffic

Zlatá Křepelka u Skrbeně, which the new owner managed to open at the beginning of the covid pandemic, has closed again. There are no businesses in Olomouc-Chomoutov in operation.

“I remember that there were maybe five pubs in Horka. Autodemont, that was the concept, then Na Kovárná in Sedlisko, Sokolka, Melichárek brewery had a seating area, Hunter’s hut. Today? There are two in operation, including Lovecká Chata, and sporadically Sedlisko,” explained the employee of the municipal office.

The only pub is subsidized by the city

For example, in Moravské Beroun, which has a population of 3,000, today the only functioning gastroenterprise is run by the town.

“It is the only restaurant facility. In order for there to be something here, it is run and subsidized by the city, which employs restaurant staff,” confirmed the mayor of the city, Jan Hicz.

Lots of businesses for rent

Those interested in buying or renting a restaurant in Olomouc can find several options in the current offers of real estate agencies.

For example, an establishment with apartments on Hlavní ulica in Skrben, which is still in operation, a business in Bohuňovice on 6. května ulica, or a restaurant in Bílá Lhota-Měník, which is for sale for only 1.5 million crowns.

Kapitolka in Samotišky is still for sale. A business on the outskirts of Olomouc, Taverna U Pece in Řepčín, is now available for rent.

Cafes are thriving

Last year, according to the data of the company Dotykačka, whose cash register system is used by the largest share of domestic gastro establishments, total sales for the year 2023 increased by 3 percent year-on-year, in the Olomouc region by an average of 5 percent. However, after accounting for the effect of inflation, the past year was rather unprofitable for a large part of the companies.

“Numbers must always be seen in context. Unfortunately, the increase in sales is opposed by inflation. In reality, the gastro industry ended up in the red. And we are only talking about areas that correspond to the average. Gastroenterprises had worse scores in a number of places,” said Petr Menclík, director of Dotykačka.

His words were confirmed by Luboš Kastner, a member of the board of the Chamber of Commerce: “Gastronomy is not returning to real growth. He is constantly hampered by new obstacles. While 2023 was a year of struggles with the prices of energy and raw materials, 2024 will be a year of customers struggling with higher prices that gastro – especially for drinks – will have to pass on to them due to higher VAT.”

The year-long analysis of Dotykačka confirms the change in consumer preferences. In the long term, cafes whose customers tolerate above-average price increases are the most successful. Bistros and restaurants are also doing well – especially those for a more demanding clientele. After several years of declines, the segments of pubs and hotels stabilized in the past year. Nightlife-oriented businesses are experiencing major declines.
