A family burned down, people jumped from windows. A deliberately started fire engulfed the entire house in five minutes

A house fire in Solingen, Germany, in which four people died on Monday, was deliberately started, according to preliminary findings. According to the DPA agency, the public prosecutor’s office in Wuppertal informed about this today.

Four members of a Bulgarian family died in a fire in an older house in Solingen in western Germany – father, mother and two children, one less than three years old and the other a five-month-old infant. Another nine people ended up in hospital with various serious injuries.

There is no indication that the arson had a “xenophobic motive”, said Wuppertal public prosecutor Heribert Kaune-Gebhardt.

The fire broke out in the wooden staircase of the more than 100-year-old house and spread to the roof within five minutes. “Distinct remains of a fire accelerant” were found in the stairwell, the prosecutor’s office said. Based on this, the investigators assume that it was an intentionally started fire.

When the firemen arrived, the house was already fully engulfed in flames, so the escape route was also closed. Some residents jumped out of the window in panic. Firefighters deployed up to 120 people to the event.
