Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Marian Jurečka (KDU-ČSL) met with President Pavlo at the Castle on Thursday, vice-president Karel Havlíček, head of deputies Alena Schillerová and deputy Aleš Juchelka arrived for the ANO movement. David Marek, adviser to the president and chief economist of Deloitte, also participated in the meeting. They discussed pension reform together. The meeting with the president was supposed to help politicians reach an agreement so that the set rules would last even after the elections.

The government coalition plans to increase the retirement age above 65 according to increasing life expectancy, introduce a minimum pension of 20 percent of the average wage, lower the calculation of new pensions and an earlier pension for work in a risky environment. According to her, the reform is necessary to mitigate the decline and make pensions sustainable for future generations.

The opposition criticizes some measures, especially lower new pensions and raising the retirement age. However, Minister Jurečka stated earlier this week that he does not expect to find a compromise from Thursday’s meeting, but it could happen at further meetings.

Pension reform from 2025

The Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Marian Jurečka, presented the last part of the government’s pension reform proposal at the beginning of March. If the reform is approved, the individual points will gradually apply from 2025.

For example, the retirement age should gradually increase according to life expectancy, workers in risky professions should be entitled to a pension earlier. It is supposed to slow down the growth of newly granted pensions, the minimum pension is expected to grow. Working pensioners are supposed to have their social security payments forgiven, but at the same time they may lose pension increases.
