“Raising a young jackdaw is very demanding from a breeder’s point of view. It is necessary to adhere to the fact that an adult rook sleeps in a deep hole during the day in nature, at the same time we must respect the rook’s mother, who does not always sleep during the day and is not always willing to nurse her young,” said the spokeswoman.

“Hrabáč’s mother is at the same time somewhat inattentive and quite careless in her care of the young, so she could unintentionally harm the young,” noted zoologist Eliška Veselá.

According to her, in the first period of life, the cub needs a temperature of around 33 degrees Celsius in the room. “We are not able to achieve that in a burrow. That’s why the cub must be in a heated crate and it is attached to the mother several times a day for feeding under the supervision of the nurse,” the zoologist stated.

According to her, the caregiver must also add milk to the supply for the time when the mother is active and not breastfeeding. Milk supplies come in handy especially early in the morning and late at night. “During breastfeeding, the female licks the cub and thus provokes its emptying, the caretaker must then treat the skin of the little rake and weigh it once a day so that we know if it is doing well,” added Veselá.

There are only seven zoos in Europe that breed Cape grebes.

“A small rake requires great care and constant attention until its weight grows from the initial 1,550 grams to five kilograms. Then there is no risk of catching a cold or lying down, and he can be with his mother continuously,” Gronská pointed out.

The Olomouc Zoo has been breeding voles since 2017. Since then, they have raised two cubs here. Hrabáč ranks among the very rare bred species. It is kept in approximately 25 European zoos, but only seven of them breed these animals. In the Czech Republic, grebes are also kept in zoos in Prague, Pilsen and Dvő Králové.

In the wild, the rake lives in much of Africa south of the Sahara. The loggerhead sleeps during the day and becomes active at dusk when it runs around the landscape looking for termites. Using its strong claws, it digs up the termite nest and seizes the termites themselves with a sticky tongue up to 30 cm long and processes them with flat teeth that do not have roots and are still growing.
