Lubricating equipment for track arches will also be part of the reconstructed track.

In the coming weeks, users of Prague’s public transport will have to cope with a major restriction of tram traffic in the center after the tram lockout on Letná. Transport company hl. City of Prague (DPP) has prepared for the period from April 29 to June 29 the reconstruction of the line between Na Poříčí Street and Senovážný náměstí. In fact, it will be a complete replacement of the body of the track.

The shutdown will affect 12 day (and four night) lines, which is related to the demolition work on the Libeň bridge. Lines 1, 3, 6, 7, 12, 14, 15, 24, 25, 26, 27, 42, 91, 92, 94 and 96 will run on changed routes. During the reconstruction, automobile traffic will be excluded from Dlážděná Street and for the most part also from Havlíčkova Street.

The tram line around Masaryk station in Havlíčková and Dlážděná Street dates back to 1983, when it underwent the last complete reconstruction. In 2003, its lifespan was extended by the so-called repanelization, i.e. the fitting of large-scale panels. According to DPP, due to the frequency of operation, the panels are already at the end of their useful life, and the structural layers beneath them have also degraded.

“Therefore, in this section, we have reached a state where it is no longer expedient from a technical or economic point of view to implement only another repanelization, but we have to completely reconstruct the entire track, i.e. replace all its layers up to a depth of approximately 60 centimeters. In other words, we have to demolish the entire original structure of the track, dismantle it, take everything away and rebuild the entire structure using modern technologies,” added Miroslav Penc, head of the Transport Route Tramway DPP unit.

The reconstructed track will be built by DPP on a concrete slab with the rails fixed with the W-tram system. They will add anti-vibration mats under it, which cannot be installed in the track other than during its complete reconstruction. After the reconstruction, the track should be quieter not only thanks to the mats, but also thanks to the improved radii of the arches at the intersection with Hybernská Street. Part of the reconstructed track will also include lubrication devices for track arches, thanks to which, according to DPP’s assumptions, noise and rail wear will be reduced.

The DPP has published details on changes to the operation of individual lines on its website.
