Alonso quashed the speculation. I have a split job in Leverkusen, I’m staying, he announced

--

Xabi Alonso (42) announced at Friday’s press conference that he will be part of Bayer Leverkusen next season as well. The Spanish coach thus definitively put an end to speculation about his possible departure to Liverpool or Bayern Munich – that is, to clubs that are currently trying to find a coach for the upcoming season. Patrik Schick, Adam Hložek and Matěj Kovář, who work in Leverkusen, do not have to worry about a change of coach.

“There has been a lot of speculation about my future. I wanted to use the international break to think and make a decision. I had a very good meeting last week and informed the club of my decision to continue as coach.” Alonso said at a press conference.

“This is the right place for me to develop as a coach. I am a young coach and right now I feel that this is the right place for me. The players have given me so many reasons to continue to believe in the team. I feel that here my the work is not done yet” continued the Spanish coach.

“It’s my first full season as a manager. I still have a lot to prove. I feel stable at the club and with the team. I have communicated my thoughts to the players and the management. We have to enjoy this year. It will be really intense, but hopefully enjoyable,” he concluded .

Xabi Alonso, who has been working in Leverkusen since October 2022, has a contract with the club of the current Bundesliga leader until 2026, although he has recently been linked with Bayern Munich and Liverpool, where current coaches Thomas Tuchel and Jürgen Klopp will retire after the season.

The Spanish strategist, whose services are in high demand, is one of the main reasons why Bayer are undefeated this season and can win three trophies.

As well as leading the league with a ten-point lead over Bayern, Leverkusen are also in action in the DFB Cup, where they will face second division side Fortuna Düsseldorf in the semi-finals, meaning they will fill the role of heavy favourites. A much tougher opponent awaits the German club in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, where they will compete against West Ham United in an attractive match, where the Czech duo Tomáš Souček and Vladimír Coufal are active.
