The expected Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Noble Numbat has been released, which will have standard support until June 2029. Existing users of the previous LTS version will not be offered the update until the first patch release of 24.04.1 LTS, which is scheduled for August 15. Users of version 23.10 with short support will be prompted to update immediately.

The new release comes with Linux kernel 6.8, systemd v255.4 and Netplan 1.0 network interface manager. GNOME 46, Firefox 124, LibreOffice 24.2, Thunderbird 115 and other new software await you on the desktop. Developers will be pleased with GCC 14, Python 3.12, OpenJDK 21 LTS, LLVM 18, Rust 1.75, Golang 1.22 and .NET 8.

In addition to the main variant of Ubuntu, there are also new versions of the offshoots Edubuntu, Kubuntu Lubuntu, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Unity, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Kylin and Ubuntu Cinnamon.

This release reintroduces support for automated server installation of the system on ZFS. This is a new implementation in Subiquity-based installers that is unencrypted by default. Encryption for installing on ZFS will be available in one of the next versions of Ubuntu.

An experimental Full Disk Encryption (FDE) option supported by the TPM chip has also been added, based on years of experience with Ubuntu Core. On supported platforms, it is no longer necessary to manually enter passphrases at system startup. Instead, the TPM chip holds the decryption key, providing greater security against physical attacks. A TPM 2.0 chip is required and not all hardware platforms are supported.
