The baby girl, who was named Rouh, was born by caesarean section at a hospital in Rafah shortly after midnight on Sunday. Despite the chaos, the child was resuscitated and given oxygen with a hand pump. However, on Thursday, the little girl died and was buried next to her mother, the BBC reports.

Rouh was among the 16 children killed in two airstrikes in Rafah last weekend. All the children lost their lives during the bombing of the residential complex where they lived. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they targeted Hamas fighters and their infrastructure, writes the BBC.

The child’s mother was seven and a half months pregnant. The attack on the house of the sleeping al-Sakani family, in which, in addition to the pregnant woman, her husband and three-year-old daughter, took place shortly after midnight on Saturday. Only Sabreen, who was pregnant, survived and was taken to hospital with extensive injuries, where she underwent an emergency caesarean section, according to the BBC.

The baby girl was placed in an incubator in critical condition. She weighed just 1.4 kilograms and had breathing problems caused by premature birth. The mother of the deceased woman told the BBC that the family was ready to adopt the child.

The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza says that of the more than 34,000 people killed in Gaza since the war began on October 7, at least two-thirds are women and children. An estimated 1.4 million people are now trapped in Rafah and, according to Israeli media, preparations are underway to evacuate them, the BBC adds.
