Why are there explosions coming from the construction site? We found 314 bombs there, the Greek mayor admitted

According to e-kathimerini, the public became aware of the whole matter when Jannis Konstantatos, the mayor of the Athens suburb of Elliniko-Argyropoli, had to explain to many outraged citizens why there were frequent explosions coming from the construction site of a major revitalization project.

“These are controlled explosions,” the mayor tried to reassure people at a press conference after telling them about the discovery of 314 bombs. “They were two meters under the former facilities of several associations, under kindergartens and sports facilities built for the Olympic Games,” he explained, adding that the vast majority of the old ammunition had already been disposed of by Greek army pyrotechnicians.

The old Elliniko airport is to undergo revitalization as part of The Ellinikon project.

“It’s a mystery how the whole airport and its many facilities, where thousands of people entered every day, functioned in such a minefield,” the mayor said, unable to explain how it was possible that the bombs were not invented during the construction of the facilities for the Olympics.

Elliniko Airport was built in the late 1930s. During World War II, it was used by the German Luftwaffe during the occupation of Greece. In 1947, an American air base was located there, among other things, from where the United States later, between 1960 and 1993, monitored the Eastern Mediterranean. Elliniko also served as a civilian international airport until 2001.

Three years later, part of the complex was transformed into the venue of the Olympic Games and, until recently, a refugee camp was located there. The entire area is now undergoing intensive revitalization.

In England, they detonated a half-ton bomb from the Second World War. They evacuated thousands of people
