What future awaits televisions – News

--

In various science fiction films, the creators let their imaginations run wild when they showed the modern concept of monitors and televisions in the form of transparent panels. But the producers are now showing that this is no music of the future – the first transparent concepts have already been revealed.

Manufacturers have been flirting with transparent displays for several years, but the attempts so far have not exactly been successful twice, which resulted in us never seeing a production version. The previously presented concepts usually had so many ailments that although they looked effective, no one wanted to look at them in the long term.

CES 2024: The era of transparent TVs is coming

This is now changing with MicroLED technology, which offers enough power to make the image bright, sharp and full of color at the same time. In addition, the new product eliminates other ills of transparent LCD displays that we knew before, for example, it does without wide frames – it basically has none.

Although this is still a concept and Samsung does not want to reveal anything about mass production just yet, it is clear from the presentation that the era of transparent TVs is indeed coming.

What could it look like in practice? In the past, Samsung tried several times to disguise TVs, for example, behind pictures, so that they would not be so distracting in the living room. We are talking about the Frame product line, which masks the screen in a distinctive frame resembling a picture.

However, we could now have a picture hung on the wall with transparent glass, which would turn into a TV only when we really want to watch it. Similarly, computer monitors in homes could also be hidden in the space, so that they are not so distracting in bedrooms or living rooms.

No cables

LG also introduced its own transparent TV this year. According to the manufacturer, the Signature OLED T model “frees users from the dominant black screen that can disrupt the design of their home”. “The beautiful transparent screen of the TV also helps to enlarge the space and creates a feeling of its openness,” highlighted the main advantage of the new product at the exhibition center.

The truth is that a transparent OLED screen does not have some of the limitations that we are used to with traditional models. For example, until now it was problematic to place the TV somewhere in the space, because then it divided and disrupted the room, not to mention the unsightly cables on the back.

But this is not a threat with the new product, you can easily place the Signature OLED T in the middle of the living room, the TV will still not obstruct the view thanks to the transparent panel.

You don’t even have to worry about the bundle of cables. The image is transmitted to the TV wirelessly. All cables are connected to the supplied Zero Connect Box, which then communicates with the TV.

The modular design of the new product, which facilitates various installation methods, also deserves to be highlighted. “The OLED T TV comes as free-standing, wall-mounted or wall-mounted. Customers can further customize it by adding freestanding or hanging shelves on either side of the screen to best suit their unique tastes and preferences,” company representatives stated.

“LG’s transparent OLED TV allows owners to discover new forms of entertainment and use thanks to its dual display mode: transparent or opaque. Thanks to the Always-On-Display function, the OLED T becomes a transparent digital canvas for the presentation of works of art, videos or photos. The content displayed on the transparent screen seems to float in the air, but at the same time it blends with the surrounding space, creating an impressive visual effect that brings a unique atmosphere,” they added.

Another option, they say, is the T-Bar feature, which offers a useful information indicator at the bottom of the screen. The T-Bar displays news alerts, weather updates or the names of songs being played, while the rest of the screen provides a clear, unobstructed view of the space beyond.

Potential buyers must take into account that the transparent TV does not have such saturated colors as we are used to with traditional models. However, the news is a clear example of the direction in which the development of TV will probably go.

Like a bird

C Seed unveiled its N1 folding TVs last year, they should officially go on sale in the first quarter of this year.

When you first look at a folding TV, it looks like a magic trick. The screen folds in three places like a sheet of paper and folds into the guts of the brutally massive stand. In this state, it resembles a minimalist metal sculpture.

In reality, however, the screen is not flexible at all, as it consists of four panels with MicroLED technology. It is characterized by the fact that it does without frames. Therefore, the TV looks like one big surface when unfolded.

C Seed N1 TV in assembled condition

Only if you look very closely, from a few tens of centimeters, will you reveal the whole mystery of the folding TV. However, no one will be looking at the giant TV this way, given the large diagonal, we rather count on a distance of several meters. And then you no longer have a chance to recognize that the image actually consists of multiple screens.

The overall impression of the giant TV is therefore more than good. Rather than the picture quality, which is at a very high level, but the unboxing of the TV looks most impressive. It kind of resembles a bird spreading its wings. Everything happens automatically, just press a button on the remote control.

C Seed makes its N1 TV in two designs – indoor and outdoor. The first mentioned category is offered in diagonals of 103, 137 and 165 inches, i.e. 261, 248 and 419 cm. The outdoor version of the folding TV is then only available in two larger sizes, i.e. 137 and 165 inches.

The price will start at 200,000 dollars, i.e. 4.5 million crowns. Larger diagonals or versions intended for outside will logically be even more expensive, specifically the outdoor version will start at 240,000 dollars (5.4 million crowns).

To work

However, giant TVs don’t have to be just for watching the latest movies and series, as Sharp has shown. The new Aquos Board PN-LA series looks like a TV used lying down, but in fact it is an interactive monitor for work.

The touch screen is the most important part of the machine. Even the smallest one is literally giant – there are three different sizes to choose from: 64.5″, 74.5″ and 85.6″, i.e. 163.8 cm, 189.2 cm and 217.4 cm.

Above all, the last-mentioned variant is therefore larger than most televisions that people have at home. A 4K screen was used for all three novelties, which is also touch-sensitive. A pen for drawing on the display is included in the package.

FlatFrog’s InGlass M5 technology makes drawing on the screen feel very natural. It is similar to writing on real paper with a pen or pencil.

At the same time, the touch surface can recognize up to 20 presses at once. In the office, several people can easily work on the monitor at the same time. It will come in handy in situations where designers will be editing a model together.

“Our goal was to create the most natural writing and drawing experience possible,” the company’s representatives say, noting that the panel boasts a high brightness of up to 500 cd/m2 for good readability in offices with intense lighting and a premium glass layer that minimizes glare and sticking fingers.

Calling the two larger models ordinary monitors is blasphemy. These are full-fledged all-in-one assemblies, in the guts of which is hidden a built-in computer with an Intel Core i5 chip. It runs the Windows 11 operating system.

Built-in stereo speakers are also a matter of course. If their 10 W power is not enough for someone, it will also be possible to optionally purchase an original soundbar. It also boasts a built-in webcam, which is useful for video conferences.

However, with all three new products, you can also connect any other device that will serve as an image source. And even wirelessly – Apple AirPlay, Google Cast and Miracast standards are supported.

Potential applicants must expect a price in the order of hundreds of thousands of crowns. For example, the top version with a diagonal of 85.6″ is already offered in the USA for 16,995 dollars, which corresponds to 382,600 CZK.
