The post office is canceling not only branches, but also mailboxes. And another reduction is coming

--

Česká pošta is reducing not only its branches, but also orange boxes. There are currently 81 mailboxes in Olomouc and 363 in the entire district. Last year, less than three dozen of them disappeared from the streets.

In Olomouc last year, Česká pošta closed 7 out of 14 branches as part of cost-saving measures. In the past year, it also canceled 5 mailboxes in the regional city.

Currently, there are 81 of them operating in Olomouc – for comparison, for example, in January 2016 there were 181 of them in the city. Today there are 363 boxes in Olomouc, last year 27 of them were canceled in the entire district.

“Anyone else use this? I thought they just forgot to remove it,” smiled a man in his thirties heading to the nearby tram stop, smiling over the dusty orange box on Míru Street in Olomouc.

Using. But the number of customers and parcels dropped into regularly collected public mailboxes is decreasing every year.

Another reduction

According to the Czech Post, their number and distribution are tied to the submission of letter parcels in this form, i.e. interest on the part of clients.

“One of the reasons for the reduction of mailboxes is the constant decrease in the volume of mail delivered. Regular mailbox withdrawals cost a certain amount of money and if they do not contain submitted items, it is a loss. Another reason is that there are more mailboxes than the relevant legislation states,” explained Czech Post spokesman Ivo Vysoudil.

The post office has closed, what will happen to the buildings in and around Olomouc?

The number of mailboxes is set by Czech Post by decree. It determines where and how many mailboxes Česká pošta must have in order to comply with the parameters.

“If the decree is not amended, the plan is to reduce mailboxes for the year 2024 and beyond in the order of hundreds, about 500,” said the spokesperson.

According to Vysoudil, the reduction of orange boxes will be higher in the event of an amendment to the legislation.

“Up to 4,000 mailboxes should gradually be abolished,” he added, adding that at the same time an analysis of the use of individual mailboxes and a revision of the layout of the remaining ones would take place so that the coverage of the territory corresponds as much as possible to the legislation and the needs of Czech Post customers.

What the decree imposes

In every settlement with a maximum of 10,000 inhabitants, there must be such a number of mailboxes that there is at least one mailbox for every thousand (even initial) inhabitants.

The requirement does not need to be met if in each residential complex that has more than 10,000 inhabitants, there are such a number of mailboxes that the distance from any part of the residential complex (with the exception of peripheral parts with significantly less built-up density) does not exceed one kilometer to the nearest mailbox .
